Pinoy Boxer used Dempsey Roll in Anime to Win Gold

Ian Clark Bautista, a Pinoy boxer, used the Dempsey Roll to beat his  Laotian opponent in  the 28th Southeast Asian Games in 2015 and to grab a gold medal from the said olympics.

Bautista first punctuated his weaves with quick hooks, eventually landing a solid left hook to his opponent’s jaw that quickly knocked down the Laotian fighter.

The clip below uploaded in Youtube went viral after a video creator stitched together scenes from the actual boxing match and the popular anime.

Not all boxers can pull the move off, but Bautista, even though an amateur Pinoy boxer was able to do so. It requires a strong but not so rigid body to achieve the right form and correct power to execute the Depmsey Roll.

The Dempsey Roll was named after its creator, Jack Dempsey, a boxing legend active during the 1920s. The technique was his Sunday Punch. It involves the weaving of the user’s body left and right, forming a figure eight. Then, the user bashes his opponent with punches from the left and right direction.

In the anime Hajime no Ippo, the protagonist of the show, featherweight boxer Makunouchi Ippo, has the Dempsey Roll as his ever-evolving signature move.
